The parodos in Philippi in the theater of ancient Greece, is a side-entrance to the stage, or the first song that is sung by the chorus at the beginning of a Greek tragedy.

The ancient theatre of Philippi is an important and remarkable monument. It is located at the feet of the acropolis and it is supported on the eastern wall of the city of Philippi. Even though it has sustained many changes throughout the centuries and some interventions so that it can host the Philippi Festival, it still preserves many of its original elements. Opposite the ancient theatre of Philippi there are the ruins of the ancient city. The ancient city took its name in 356 B.C. after the father of Alexander the Great, Philippos the II.

Philippi is also the place where Paul was believed to have been imprisoned. We will stop and view a crypt dating back to the Roman period that is thought to have served as a prison for Paul.

We learn more about Apostle Paul and the spread of Christianity. Philippi is where Apostle Paul preached his first sermon and baptized the first Christians in Europe. Philippi was the first European country to accept Christianity. Philippi is mentioned in ACTS 16:9-12 where Paul had a vision begging him to come and as the location of Lydia being baptized by Paul ACTS 16:13-15. Our tours will visit this location to learn more about Paul
baptizing Christians in the Philippi area.

Philippi

Acts 16:9-12 9 During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

11 From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. 12 From there we traveled to
Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.

Acts 16:13-15 13 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. 15 When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.”
And she persuaded us.
