The Basilica of St. John | The Seven Churches of Revelation
The Basilica of St. JohnBasilica of St. John, was built in the 6th century, under emperor Justinian I & his wife Theodora. The monumental basilica was in the shape of a cross and was covered with six domes. Its construction, being of stone and brick, is an extremely rare find among the architecture of its time. Raised by two steps and covered with marble, the tomb of St John was under the central dome, that was once carried by the four columns at the corners. St John or the Apostle John was the writer of the Fourth Gospel and the book of Revelation. He was the youngest of the twelve apostles, and especially closest to the Jesus. This closeness is often portrayed in icons of the last supper, where St. John leans on Jesus. |
