We were created to be doers. Pictures are fine, and a great educator of places and lands that are far from home. Likewise, a jumbo TV screen can be an effective way to take a virtual tour of historic places. And hearing about a traditional, handmade bread baked from a recipe passed down from generation to generation can make your mouth water. But…
Shared pictures don’t carry with them the experience of sitting on the Southern Steps that lead to the Southern Wall of the Temple in Jerusalem, the very steps Jesus sat on with His disciples while teaching them.
Watching a virtual tour of historical sites doesn’t offer you the smell of the air or the vibrant colors of the flowers in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed and was ultimately betrayed by a friend.
Listening to the description of, and acquiring the recipe for, hand-made Challah does not compare to tasting it for one’s self, especially if doing so from the top of the Mount of Olives while overlooking Jerusalem.

There are times in life when we must rely on pictures, virtual tours and the like, to provide experiences for us. But then comes a day that we can finally regard a thing in person, and it’s transformative! We’ve been urged to taste and see, to go and tell. These are not spectator instructions. These are participant instructions. Don’t let 2023 be a spectator sport. Choose to be a participant. Taste. See. Go. Tell. There’s nothing like being there!
