Exodus Egypt & Jordan Tour 2022
Travel To Petra is a historic and archaeological city in southern Jordan. The area around Petra has been inhabited from as early as 7000 BC, and the Nabataeans might have settled in what would become the capital city of their kingdom, as early as the 4th century BC.
Aaron’s Tomb – It is believed that Moses’ brother Aaron died and was buried in the Petra area and it stands atop Aaron’s Mountain (Jabal Harun), which is the highest peak in the area.
Numbers 20:23,
27, 28 – “At Mount Hor, near the border of Edom, the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, Aaron will be gathered to his people…They went up Mount Hor in the sight of the whole community…and Aaron died their on top of the mountain”
Petra Treasury Access – In ancient times, Petra might have been approached from the south on a track leading across the plain of Petra, around Jabal Haroun (“Aaron’s Mountain”). Another approach was possibly from the high plateau to the north. Today, most visitors approach the site from the east. The impressive eastern entrance leads steeply down through a dark, narrow gorge, in places only 10–13 feet wide, called the Siq (“shaft”), a natural geological feature formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks and serving as a waterway flowing into Wadi Musa.
Walking or Horse Carriage – The walk into Petra is breathtaking, walking down the narrow paths and viewing the beautiful colors of the sandstone. You will see how the Nabataeans controlled the water supply that led to the rise of the desert city, creating an artificial oasis. These innovations stored water for prolonged periods of drought and enabled the city to prosper.
Don’t worry if you don’t feel like the walk in and out you can always take the fast route and ride a Horse Carriage. A super fun way to visit Petra for sure!
Explore the Petra Treasury – At the end of the narrow gorge, the Siq, stands Petra’s most elaborate ruin, popularly known as Al-Khazneh (“the Treasury”), hewn into the sandstone cliff.
Made famous and known around the world with its appearance in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade in 1989.
The Treasury is one of the most elaborate temples in Petra, a city of the Nabatean Kingdom inhabited by the Arabs in ancient times. And like most of the structures in Petra this was carved out of a sandstone rock face.
Explore the Petra Treasury – It became known as “Al-Khazneh”, or The Treasury, in the early 19th century by the area’s Bedouins as they had believed it contained treasures. While remaining in remarkably preserved condition, the face of the structure is marked by hundreds of bullet holes in the hopes to dislodge riches that were once rumored to be hidden within it.
Petra Treasury Camel Ride – Don’t forget the Camel Ride. Riding a camel in front of the Treasury not only gives you a greater perspective of the amazing carving out of the rock, but a great photo that will remind you of your visit for years to come. Oh and the camels LOVE when you ride them so does their handlers.
