Naples, Italy is the regional capital of Campania and the third-largest city of Italy, after Rome and Milan. First settled by Greeks in the first millennium BC, Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban areas in the world. The city was an important part of Magna Graecia, played a major role in the merging of Greek and Roman society, and was a significant cultural center under the Romans. What a spectacular view of Mount Vesuvius!
Naples, Italy‘ historic city centre is the largest in Europe and a wide range of culturally and historically significant sites are nearby, including the Palace of Caserta and the Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Since the late 20th century, Naples has had significant economic growth, helped by the construction of the Centro Direzionale business district and an advanced transportation network, which includes the Alta Velocità high-speed rail link to Rome and Salerno and an expanded subway network.
Castel Nuovo (English: “New Castle”), often called Maschio Angioino, is a medieval castle located in front of Piazza Municipio and the city hall (Palazzo San Giacomo) in central Naples, Campania, Italy. Its scenic location and imposing size makes the castle, first erected in 1279, one of the main architectural landmarks of the city. It was a royal seat for kings of Naples, Aragon and Spain until 1815.
The last important event dates back to 1799, when it was proclaimed the birth of the Parthenopean Republic (Neapolitan Republic). Renovated for the last time in 1823 by Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, it later hosted the
“artillery arsenal” and a “pyrotechnic office” which in 1837 estimated to be more prudent transfer of the guns factory of the Torre Annunziata.
Don’t forget to try the PIZZA! Neapolitan cuisine is noted for its association with pizza, which originated in the city, as well as numerous other local dishes.
Neapolitan pizza also known as Naples-style pizza, is a style of pizza made with tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. It must be made with either San Marzano tomatoes or Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio, which grow on the volcanic plains to the south of Mount Vesuvius, and Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, a protected designation of origin cheese made with the milk from water buffalo raised in the marshlands of Campania and Lazio in a semi-wild state, or “Fior di Latte di
Agerola”, a cow milk mozzarella made exclusively in the Agerola comune. This style of pizza gave rise to the New York-style pizza that was first made by Italian immigrants to the United States in the early 20th century.
